作者简介

Susan Brittain’s fascination with crochet began very early, when she was 4 or 5 years old. She would watch her grandmother, who had lost her sight in midlife, spend hours crocheting beautiful afghans for friends and family, counting the stitches with her fingers. By the age of 8, Susan was crocheting her own projects, starting with simple patterns such as scarves, and then moving on to afghans, toys, and sweaters. Although her creative streak has led her to learn many different crafts, crochet has been a steady thread throughout.Susan finally had the opportunity to combine work with pleasure, and she held the position of assistant editor for Crochet Fantasy magazine for a little more than two years, contributing as a designer as well. She is also the coauthor of Crocheting For Dummies (Wiley) and continues to design new projects for various yarn companies, as well as friends and family.

Reviewer: Teresa A. Dombrowski, PhD(Midwestern University) Description: This book is exactly as described by the title. It is an A-Z dictionary of terms used in the study of embryology and developmental biology. Purpose: The purpose of the dictionary is to provide a handy reference to classical and modern terminology for students and researchers engaged in the study of embryology and developmental biology. Since no such reference currently exists, the dictionary was created to fill the void. The book is a comprehensive listing of not only classical and current terminology, but also contains brief biographical outlines of pivotal researchers in the field. Audience: The author intends that the book be used by undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers. Although the book would undoubtedly be useful to undergraduate students, graduate students may find some of the definitions too truncated to be of use. The author is a credible authority in the field. Features: The dictionary seems very complete and contains terms pertinent to the classical embryology, molecular genetics, molecular developmental biology, and evolutionary developmental biology of plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. Unfortunately, there are no illustrations. Illustrations would, in some cases, be helpful adjuncts to the author's concise definitions. Assessment: The book itself is a useful addition to the field, although it seems best suited to undergraduate students taking comparative embryology or developmental biology classes, or to beginning graduate students. The broad spectrum of living organisms covered by the definitions, from plants to humans, necessitates that some topics are covered too briefly. Some definitions that might be considered key are absent (syndrome and association for instance), but the author states in the preface that he is more than receptive to including additioinal terms in subsequent editions, and includes his e-mail address for that purpose. Dye (biological and environmental sciences, Western Connecticut State U.) provides an A-to-Z reference covering classical morphological and cytological terms as well as words and concepts from modern genetics and molecular biology. The work covers terms, research, history, and people in the field. Terms were drawn from the author's core vocabulary as well as from textbooks (classic and new) and journal articles. Annotation c.
